🍭 Digital Stratacut for Blender is inspired by the animation technique pioneered by David Daniels. Special thanks to Higgsas for making it possible to use the Loft Splines node in this project.

Known issues

  • Keyframes that don't start from frame 1 don't get an offset on the Y-axis. Set the first frame position manually on the LOAF CREATOR node group (until I figure out a way to automate this).
  • If the first and last frames match, the first drawing will go missing in the loaf. A fix for this now would be to nudge the first vertex slightly (in Edit Mode).

The template

The template generates a loft object (SC STRATACUT) from Grease Pencil frames (SC INPUT + Frames collection) and adds a mesh boolean setup that adapts to the stacking order of Grease Pencil layers. Lower layers are cut first, followed by the upper layers.

The template currently supports up to 250 frames, but you can add more manually in the Frames collection.

Tips

Ensure that the stroke’s direction is consistent across frames.

I created a Geometry Nodes setup for SC INPUT that colors the generated strokes: green marks the start, and red marks the end. This is useful for verifying where strokes begin and ensuring they’re all drawn in the same direction when creating stratacut loaves in 3D.

If the loaves appear scrambled, go to Edit Mode and, under the Stroke menu, try following:

  • Switch Direction
  • Close and then Set Start Position

Switching direction example:

Each Grease Pencil layer corresponds to a single “loaf.” The template file includes 10 loaf layers already connected.

To add more, duplicate a loaf generator layer block (5 nodes), like this:

If performance starts to slow down, use the Bake button on any loaf layers you’ve finished working on.
